The quantity of services transported on IP protocol networks is growing at a very fast pace; nowadays, this platform offers digital TV (SD, HD e 3D) through PCs or dedicated video devices (smart and connected TV).

In this context, the evaluation of the Quality of Experience (QoE) perceived by users plays a fundamental role in establishing to what extent it is influenced by the network features.

It should be pointed out that new services will see an ever increasing video component, thus an objective evaluation of QoE that includes next generation multimedia features is the first step to improve perception in future Information and Communications Technology (ICT) scenarios.

Particular emphasis will be given to the research into a correlation between QoE and network performance, which can be measured in terms of Quality of Service (QoS) or through other parameters (resiliency, capacity, congestion, etc). The identification of a relation between QoS and QoE would allow adapting services to the network and, reversely, orientating the network towards given services.

Application fields include service engineering (characterization of new services to guarantee full performance of new generation networks) and network engineering (characterization of fixed and mobile networks to guarantee full support of services).

The activities of FUB will mainly include:

  • research of metrics to characterise the users perception.
  • research on influence of network degradations causes (delays, packet loss, jitter…) on the above metrics.
  • analysis of transportation technologies (fibre optic, xDLS, Wi-Fi, WiMAX, 3G and 4G) and routing (MPLS, GMPLS, Carrier Ethernet, optical burst switching, optical packet switching) and their contributions to the improvement of the QoE.

As a consequence of the activities carried out for the QoS evaluation of Internet access, performed on behalf of Italian regulator AGCOM, FUB acquired an excellent knowledge of the network behaviour, both at access and backbone level.

FUB also has a long experience in the use of Medium Opinion Score (MOS) developed by  international organizations.
