RES4MED – Renewable Energy solutions for the Mediterranean
www.res4med.org
RES4MED is a think tank on energy context and perspectives of regional Mediterranean energy systems, focused on improving the political, economic, industrial and social framework and attract investments.
FUB participates in order to share its experience and know-how, with the aim of integrating IT and ICT technologies in the energy sector. In particular, FUB draws up a technology review of the state of telecommunications infrastructures and the relevant development plans in the countries of interest in the Mediterranean basin. The review is essential to define strategies for the integration of ICT in power plants.

Joint Programme on Smart Grids (EERA)
www.eera-set.eu/eera-joint-programmes-jps/smart-grids/
Launched in 2010, the JP is coordinated by RSE and ENEA from Italy by means of an extended cross-disciplinary cooperation involving many Research and Development (R&D) participants with different and complementary expertise and facilities. It aims at addressing in a medium- to long-term research perspective, one of the most critical areas directly relating to the effective acceleration of smart grid development and deployment. The JP is structured in 5 sub-programmes:

  • Network Operation
  • Energy Management
  • Control System Interoperability
  • Electrical Storage Technologies
  • Transmission Networks

FUB is active in the Control System Interoperability sub-programme.

Joint Programme on Smart Cities (EERA)
www.eera-sc.eu
It aims to develop new scientific methods, concepts and tools designed to support European cities in their transformation into smart cities. The key focus is on large-scale integration of renewable energies and enhanced energy efficiency, enabled through smart energy management at city level.
The key areas of tomorrow’s smart cities are reflected in the four sub-programmes:

  • Energy in Cities takes an integrated approach towards urban energy planning and transformation processes.
  • Urban Energy Networks concentrates on the intelligent planning, design and operation of thermal and electrical networks in cities.
  • Energy-efficient Interactive Buildings focuses on sustainable buildings as interactive elements of the urban energy system.
  • Urban City-related Supply Technologies addresses renewable supply technologies and their integration into the urban infrastructure.

FUB is active in the Urban Energy Networks, coordinating the workpackage “Human Factors: the citizen-city interaction”.

NetWorld2020
http://networld2020.eu
NetWorld2020 is the European Technology Platform for communications networks and services gathering players of the communications networks sector: industry leaders, innovative SMEs, and leading academic institutions.
The NetWorld2020 vision for the further development of mobile and wireless, fixed and satellite communications includes the following points:

  • Contribute to collaborative research programmes on European and national level for collaborative research in the domain of mobile and wireless, fixed and satellite communication networks by a regularly updated research agenda.
  • Future communication networks will provide
    • Significantly higher mobile and wireless area capacity and more varied service capabilities compared to 2010, which will be supported by fixed backbone and access networks and complemented by satellite networks.
    • Saving 90% of energy per service provided.
    • Reducing the service creation time cycle significantly.
    • Creating a secure, reliable and dependable Internet with zero perceived downtime for services.
    • Facilitating very dense deployments of mobile and wireless communication links for over 7 trillion wireless devices serving over 7 billion people.
    • Ensuring User controlled privacy.
  • Support for business & government processes improves the competitiveness of the European economy.
  • Services hide complexity from the user with interoperability between different access systems.
  • Multi-layered mobility – users move & change devices, sub-networks in trains & cars move, software moves.
  • Peer-to-peer communities emerge to empower people to collaborate.
  • Opportunities for social applications expand through always-with-you qualities and reducing isolation.
