Social networks on Internet have deeply transformed our society in a few years and are actually one of the most studied and debated phenomenon in the scientific field and not only. Professor Alessandro Panconesi, one the most recognized leader in this sector and winner of prestigious international awards for his studies on the web, will discuss the informatics analysis of social networks where interesting phenomena of social interaction such as "six degrees of separation" and transmission of gossip can be found and modeled.
The proliferation of blogs and social networks has produced an enormous and inedited amount of data on user's taste and opinions that can be analyzed through techniques of sentiment analysis, also known as opinion mining, that will be discussed in this seminar. The Fondazione Bordoni is on the leading edge in the development of these techniques that became very popular after their utilization in the last American presidential campaign. Today this sector is facing a strong industrial growth, with highly remunerative applications such as e-commerce, business intelligence and monitoring of "brand" reputation.
Beyond the scientific aspect and the industrial applications, legislative and regulation problems related to social networks will be discussed as they are particularly felt in the light of the recent verdict that sentenced Google for violation of privacy due to a video uploaded on YouTube.
