On the 26th of January 2016 Italy signed the Memorandum of Understanding of the COST Action CA15104 – Inclusive Radio Communication Networks for 5G and beyond (IRACON). The Action started on 22nd of March 2016 and lasts four years until the 21st of March 2020. It represents the continuation of several COST Actions related to mobile radio communications.
Following a tradition that has been lasting for more than 20 years, one out of the 2 Italian Member Committee (MC) role has been assigned to FUB that this time is represented by Engineer Valeria Petrini. Engineer Paolo Grazioso was named as MC Substitute. The other MC Member who represents Italy is the Professor Roberto Verdone from University of Bologna.
The Action aims at achieving scientific breakthroughs, by introducing novel design and analysis methods for 5G, and beyond-5G, radio communication networks. The Inclusive Radio Communication Networks concept defines the technologies for supporting wireless connectivity for any rates, type of communicating units, and scenarios. Spectral and spatial efficiency are key challenges, in addition to constraints like energy consumption, latency, mobility, heterogeneity, coverage and reliability, amongst others.
The IRACON Action aims at suitably coordinate research developments on all the aspects related to the exploitation of radio resources from the radio channel characterisation, PHY, MAC and Network layers. IRACON is organised into three Disciplinary Working Group (DWGs) respectively dealing with the radio channel, PHY as well as MAC/NET layers and four Experimental WGs (EWG) that address specific topics related to Over-the-air testing, IoT, Localisation and Tracking and Radio Access.
The Action group of experts comes from both academia and industry, from a wide spread of countries all over Europe, with the support of some non-COST institutions and R&D associations and standardisation bodies worldwide.
