WBNP

Web based platform for network performance measurements.

This involves the development of a measurement platform that implements the QoS indicators, already measured with the Ne.Me.Sys and MisuraInternet Speed Test tools, in a web-based application available to end users for the evaluation of Network Performance.

Goals

The web-based platform is a client-server system present on user devices and on measurement servers hosted on Italian IXPs. Access to the service will be via browser on a special page within the portal www.misurainternet.it. The instrument is in accordance with the ETSI ES 202 765, part 4, for network performance measurements and complies with the “Large-scale Measurement of Broadband Performance” (LMAP) architecture (RFC7594 and RFC 8193) which standardizes methods and metrics.

Impact

The web-based platform for the measurement of Network Performance will make it possible to broaden the range of network metrics in a common measurement environment (or reasonably so), both from a fixed and a mobile location and will allow analyses and evaluations to be carried out on telecommunications. In particular, it is planned to evaluate the evolution of the performance of both fixed and mobile access networks.

Description

The activity involves the development of a measurement platform that integrates the QoS indicators, already measured with the Ne.Me.Sys and MisuraInternet Speed Test tools, in a web-based application available to end users for the evaluation of Network Performance. The application uses the measurement network of the MisuraInternet project, conducting network tests with the same scientific rigour as Ne.Me.Sys. but without probative value.

The service can be used via a browser on a dedicated page at the www.misurainternet.it portal and enables network performance measurements to be made, in accordance with ETSI ES 202 765 part 4, concerning the throughput for the downlink and uplink sections, latency and jitter.

The web-based platform consists of a client component, on the user’s device, and measuring servers hosted at leading Italian IXPs, in line with the directives “Large-scale Measurement of Broadband Performance” (LMAP) (RFC7594 and RFC 8193), standardizing the systems for measuring the performance of network devices.

The user will be able to evaluate the quality of an Internet access service by measurement, taking into account any limitations introduced by the terminal used.

The use of the web-based platform for the measurement of Network Performance will allow the pool of network measures to be widened to form a common measurement environment (or reasonably so), both from fixed and mobile positions, and will enable analyses and evaluations to be carried out on telecommunication networks.
