Study for comparison of EMF emissions of MV lines between single-pole underground cable installation and helically routed cable installation

The purpose of the study project is to assess whether, in relation to protecting the population from exposure to electric and magnetic fields at mains frequency (50 Hz) (ELF) in accordance with the regulations in force, whether, in the case of the adoption of an electrical conduit consisting of three single-core MV cables installed in trefoil or on a flat surface, the effects in terms of buffer strips and DPAs are comparable or not to those currently envisaged, under the same operating conditions of the power lines.

The Decree of the President of the Council of Ministers of 8 July 2003 “Establishment of exposure limits, attention values and quality objectives for the protection of the population from exposure to electric and magnetic fields at mains frequency (50 Hz) generated by power lines” (Italian Official Gazette General Series no. 200 of 29-08-2003) defines the exposure limits and attention values for the protection of the population from exposure to electric and magnetic fields at mains frequency (50 Hz) associated with the operation of power lines, in addition to the quality objective for the magnetic field, for the progressive minimisation of exposure. In the Ministerial Decree (Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea) of 29 May 2008 (Ordinary supplement no. 160 to Official Gazette no. 156 of 5 July 2008) “Approval of the calculation methodology for the determination of the buffer zones for power lines” the calculation methodology for the determination of the buffer zones for power lines is defined; in particular, the First Approximation Distance (DPA) is introduced, which assimilates in geometric terms and on the basis of the operating conditions of the power lines what constraints must be respected.

On the basis of these two regulatory documents, the general objective of the project is to carry out a study to assess, in relation to the protection of the population from exposure to electric and magnetic fields at mains frequency (50 Hz) (ELF) in accordance with the regulations in force, whether, in the case of the adoption of an electrical conduit consisting of three single-core MV cables installed in trefoil or on a flat surface, the effects in terms of buffer strips and DPAs are comparable or not to those currently envisaged, under the same operating conditions of the power lines.
