Virtual and Real: New Technologies for Cultural Heritage

Pdf: Programme

Audio, video and slides of this seminar are available in the multimedia section.

In recent years the increasing usage of information and communication technologies for the study, conservation, valorisation, and fruition of artistic artefacts, has created the conditions for a true revolution in the Cultural Heritage sector.

The use of the new multimedia technologies makes it possible a new approach to the comprehension and fruition of the artistic heritage and, specifically, of its "original" context, through "virtual" and interactive tours.

These possibilities will be discussed by Francesco Antinucci, of the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies, CNR, Rome, who is an internationally recognized expert in the use of the new digital technologies for communication and learning purposes and a developer of virtual reality and multimedia applications for the Cultural Heritage sector, and by Antonella Sbrilli, professor of History of Contemporary Art, Department of Literature and Philosophy, La Sapienza University in Rome, who will present an overview of the most recent and sophisticated ICT technologies for Cultural Heritage, with an emphasis on their impact, advantages, and problems, and on the results obtained by already existing applications in a scenario in which the demand for the use of these advanced technologies for tourist purposes is undergoing an exponential growth.

The new technologies for the communication of the artistic and archaeological heritage can have an important economic impact, as it will be illustrated during the afternoon session through a discussion with experts from the academic world and from various institutional and industrial sectors.
