Bordoni Seminars: “5G and Net Neutrality”

Under the patronage of the Ministry of Economic Development

The 5G network is a complex "network of networks", which are different and interoperating with each other and that, thanks to the algorithms that manage and optimise it, is "seen" by services and applications as a single network.

The 5G network is a complex “network of networks”, which are different and interoperating with each other and that, thanks to the algorithms that manage and optimise it, is “seen” by services and applications as a single network. Each service sees a “virtual portion” of the network (“slice”) and traffic management is totally controlled by orchestration algorithms.
We thus believe that the topic of Net Neutrality, which has been the subject of discussion in previous years at European and international level, must be adapted to the new scenario that will be created with the fifth generation networks.

Should the general principles of Net Neutrality be reinterpreted in light of 5G’s characteristics, where specialised services become the rule?

Is this the end of Net Neutrality? Or should the concept of neutrality be taken to a more general level and applied to the proper and accountable functioning of orchestration algorithms?

FUB will devote its first Bordoni Seminar of 2019 to this technological, legal and regulatory topic.
