Ermanno Fionda

Ermanno Fionda holds a Doctor of Philosophy academic Degree (PhD) in “Information Engineering” from the University of Perugia (Italy), and a Degree (“Laurea”) in physics from the “Sapienza” University of Rome (Italy).

From 1981 to 1982 he served as researcher in the project: “Energetic balance in the lower atmospheric layer” at the “Istituto di Fisica dell Atmosfera” (IFA) of the Council of National Research (CNR), Rome (I).

Since 1983 He has been working with the Fondazione Ugo Bordoni (FUB). His major research experience has been on various influences of the Earth's atmosphere on radio waves for communication and on remote sensing techniques. His researches are concerned with microwave and millimetre - wave propagation with particular focus on scattering, rain-fading analysis, scintillation and remote sensing of the atmospheric properties by passive microwave radiometry, GPS observations and retrieval inversion methods. He has been involved in several European scientific programs (COST), in the ITALSAT, OLYMPUS experiments, in the ESA/ENVISAT satellite calibration project, and in the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) project by the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI). He was a Visiting Scientist at the NOAA/Wave Propagation Laboratory (WPL) also at the University of Colorado, Boulder (CO) US, working on passive microwave radiometric techniques and on remote sensing observations.

He is now participating in the European satellite ALPHASAT project, with specific activities in the TDP#5 Q-V band experiment. He is a member of the European COST-IC0802 panel of research, presently working on the ALPHASAT experiment. He is an Editor of the COST-IC0802 Handbook focused on the exploitation of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and ground-based microwave radiometric data to generate new SatCom models at Q-V.

He is a member of two European projects, “ EDISON ” and “ SAFETRIP ”, and of the Italian projects “I-MULE” and “4-UHF”.

He is author or co-author of about 100 papers published in per-reviewed journals or presented at international and national conferences.
